Billing Hall

Billing Hall, also known as Great Billing Hall, was constructed in 1629 but was altered substantially by Lord John Cavendish about 1776 into a Georgian-style mansion. The Elwes family lived there from c1796 to 1931. The Hall was sold to the Musicians Benevolent Fund in 1931 with the proposal to make it a home for aged musicians, in memory of Gervaise Elwes, a famous tenor who died in an accident in 1921. Renovation costs meant this did not happen. It was put up for sale in 1937 with the intention of demolishing the house and erecting a number of houses in the grounds. This did not happen, and the house was rented out during the War years.

In 1945, the house was bought by the Northampton Brewery Company who planned to change it to a 4* hotel. The plans did not materialize, and instead private houses were built in the grounds, and Billing Hall was demolished in 1956.
